Editorial: Gophers’ Kill is on a good roll now

Minnesota Gopher coach Jerry Kill is on a winning streak — stepping back as head coach to deal with his epilepsy after missing the Michigan game and then watching his football team score wins over Northwestern and then Nebraska.

Minnesota is fortunate, as Kill’s coaching staff has stepped up in his absence.

Acting head coach Tracy Claeys has been steady as the Gophers scored their last two wins. His calm demeanor and decisionmaking on the sideline have helped the team win.

Head coach Kill is working to relearn the good health habits he preaches to his players —“Get your sleep, make sure you eat at the right times” and take your medications properly.

Kill, 52, will remain in the coaching booth today for the third straight week as the Gophers take on Indiana.

The Gopher football program is not is disarray because of the strong coaching staff and program that Kill has installed. The players have bought into Kill’s program and have developed confidence in themselves.

Kill has slowly been working his way back into the program. He has spent time in recent weeks talking with recruits and being straight on his tenure - he plans to coach for a long time.

This Kill story has become inspiring for Gopher football this year. And winning makes it even better.

Let’s hope the Gophers keep rolling today against Indiana.
