Editorial: We all wait along with Wetterling family

The search for Jacob Wetterling continues nearly 21 years after his abduction on a St. Joseph country road.

On Oct. 22, 1989, 11-year-old Wetterling was abducted by a masked gunman around 9:15 p.m. on a rural road, southeast of St. Joseph.

Investigators Wednesday executed a search warrant on a St. Joseph farm located near the Wetterling abduction site. The search continued Thursday on the farm as authorities dug with a backhoe and hauled dirt away in a dump truck.

Minnesota once again is transfixed on the search for Jacob Wetterling.

Authorities are declining to release any details of the search at this time, not even to the Wetterling family.

It has been a long and frustrating search -- for authorities, the Wetterling family, the St. Joseph community and all of Minnesota.

Since Wetterling's abduction, his classmates have completed junior high, graduated from high school, went on to college, many have married and even started families of their own.

Through it all, Wetterling's parents -- Patty and Jerry -- continued their search efforts, raised their family, went on with their careers and waited along with the rest of Minnesota.

We hope law enforcement is making progress in the Wetterling case. As this investigation continues, Minnesota keeps waiting and praying along with the Wetterling family.
