Editorial: Be safe on this Memorial Weekend
Over the next few days, many families will begin the first major weekend of the summer — Memorial Day Weekend.
Now is also the time to think about the safety of all as families begin their long weekend — both on the highway and on the water.
Multiple law enforcement agencies across the region are reminding all motorists and passengers to buckle up. More than 400 agencies are participating in the extra Click It or Ticket seat belt patrols.
The facts show the importance of seat belts.
n In the past three years, 352 (41 percent) of the total 864 traffic deaths were not wearing seatbelts.
n Of those 352 traffic deaths victims not wearing seat belts, 41 percent were motorists age 16-29.
So be smart this holiday weekend, make sure everyone in your vehicle has their seat belt on.
Memorial Day Weekend is the first major weekend of the summer recreational season. Minnesota and other states are working to reduce watercraft operators from traveling under the influence.
The U.S. Coast Guard reports that alcohol usage is the major contributor in fatal boating accidents. Many states, including Minnesota, have tightened the laws applying to operating watercrafts (from boats to jet skis).
Keep you and your family’s future in mind this weekend while on the water and be safe.
