Amateur Baseball: Atwater drubs Regal to claim County Line title

REGAL — Mike Malvin worked a complete game and the Atwater Chuckers wrapped up the County Line League regular-season championship with an 8-3 win over Regal on Sunday.

Atwater finished 8-2 and Regal, New London-Spicer and Norway Lake-Sunburg are tied for second with 6-4 marks. Paynesville ended 3-7 and Starbuck was 1-9. Tiebreakers and playoff pairings will be decided today.

On Sunday, two-out hitting proved to be the difference, with the Chuckers scoring three runs in the third inning with two outs and they plated four more two-out runs in the fourth.

Jordan Tanner was 3-for-4 with a double and he scored twice, Matt Tanner was 2-for-5 and drove in three runs, and Justin Schroeder had two hits and two runs batted in.

Malvin surrendered three earned runs and struck out seven, and at the plate he had a hit, walked three times and scored two runs.

Tyler Cebulla drove in a run for Regal and teammate Andy Hadley was 2-for-3 and scored a run.

Tyler Horning had a monster day at the plate, hitting a home run, two doubles and drove in four runs to lead the Twins to a County Line League victory over the Pirates on Sunday at Green Lake Diamond.

NLS’ Kevin Soine was 3-for-5 and scored two runs and Scott Rambow was 2-for-4 with an RBI and he scored twice. Jake Rambow got the win and Nathaniel Swoyer worked 3.2 innings in relief.

Josh Bungum homered for the Pirates and Trent Hanson was 2-for-2.

Chris Braaten handcuffed Starbuck, allowing five hits and striking out seven in a County Line League win on Sunday.

Norway Lake-Sunburg is 6-4 in the league, 7-4 overall, and plays next at Granite Falls at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The County Line playoffs begin Sunday and pairings will be decided today.

On Sunday, NLS’ Jared Johnson had two hits and scored both runs. Jonah Johnson and Chad Searcy both hit doubles.

Starbuck’s Shane Bosek was 2-for-3 and drove in his team’s lone run.
