Amateur football: Defending champ Sting stop Broncos’ postseason run

WOODBURY  — The West Central Broncos first season ended Saturday at the hands of the defending Midwest Premier League champions.

The Minnesota Sting, based at the Woodbury High School field, smacked the freshly-minted Broncos 38-6 in the semifinal round.

The Broncos’ score came in the third quarter, a run by Joel Bauman.

The Sting, the East Division champions, will play the Brainerd Lumberjacks for the title. The Jacks jettisoned the Granite City Renegades at Collegeville 14-9.

The Broncos finished 6-5 in a debut season that included a five-game win streak.

Co-owner/player Steve Peppin stated in an email that he “is extremely grateful for our season, the fans and community support … and look forward to bringing back a lot of guys [plus] some new additions to help us bring a championship home to the west-central area.”

First-team Premier League all-stars named from the Broncos are running back  Bauman and fullback Jarrett McAllister.

Bronco honorable mention: linebackers Kyle Weinandt and Erick Johnson, defensive end Jon Lankenau, offensive lineman Matt Schirmacher and defensive back Brandon Torry.
