Cardinal Classic tennis tourney deadline Monday
Willmar Community Education and Recreation is hosting the Cardinal Classic Tennis Tournament Aug. 2-4.
The deadline to enter is Monday, July 29. New this year is a 10-and-under tournament. All participants will receive a t-shirt with registration.

Litchfield native Fenton heading National College Hockey Conference
Josh Fenton, a Litchfield High School graduate, begins his new job as commissioner of the National College Hockey Conference on Monday.
Fenton, who was named to the position July 1, will oversee the first-year eight-team league from headquarters in Colorado Springs, the St. Cloud Times reported on Friday.
Members of the NCAA Division I conference are St. Cloud State, Colorado College, University of Denver, Miami University (Ohio), University of Minnesota-Duluth, University of Nebraska-Omaha, University of North Dakota and Western Michigan University.
Fenton has worked in the Miami (Ohio) University athletic department since 2002. His last position at Miami has been as senior associate athletic director for finance and administration at the university.
Willmar, BBE to play in preseason volleyball tournament in Burnsville
Two area volleyball teams will compete in Breakdown Sports’ fourth annual Summer Elite Tournament on Aug. 3-4 at the Midwest Volleyball Warehouse in Burnsville. With a 64-team field, Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa will start Aug. 3 in Pool 3 with Blaine, Belle Plaine and Mabel-Canton.
Willmar will be in the Aug. 4 Pool 3 with Delano, Win-E-Mac and St. Peter.
The first round of play will have eight pools of four teams, running from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., followed by playoffs for the top three teams in each pool from 3-6 p.m. All pool-play matches will be best-of-three, with the first two games to 25 points (no cap) and the third to 15 points (no cap) if needed.
Louisville’s Slinden is U.S. Track & Field All-Academic
Liberty Slinden of Atwater (ACGC) and the Louisville Cardinals received U.S. Track & Field All-Academic honors, it was announced this week.
Slinden, a junior thrower, posted a 3.44 GPA as a biology major. She was one of six tracksters named from the Cardinals men’s and women’s teams. The women’s team earned All-American status a ninth straight year with a 3.05 cumulative GPA.
