Legion baseball roundup: La Crescent clips Morris for DII title

BIRD ISLAND — La Crescent, Legion Post 595, trimmed the Morris Legion 4-3 on Sunday for the championship of the 2013 American Legion DII Tournament.

BOLD, sponsored by Bird Island Post 430 and Olivia Post 186, lost out earlier Sunday in the consolation final to Winnebago/Blue Earth 3-0.

Providence Academy tripped up Taconite 10-6 for the third-place plaque.

Bird Island/Olivia hosted the 24th annual Legion DII State Tournament with all games at Lions Memorial Park.


La Crescent 4, Morris 3

Morris got RBI singles in the 1st, 3rd and 4th innings from Chandler Erickson, Mac Beier and Logan Manska respectively.

 However, La Crescent scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead that they would not relinquish.

Morris got a pair of runners on in the seventh but could not plate a run.

Consolation final

Winnebago/Blue Earth 3, Bird Island/Olivia 0

Dallas Barslou kept the BOLD hitters off-balance finishing with a four-hitter. He didn’t walk a batter.

Losing pitcher Sawyer Tersteeg despite allowing 11 hits kept the score close.

Riley Kramer silenced the Hawley bats on a 3-hitter with no walks. Kramer, batting third, also supplied 3 singles in a 14-hit offense. Tyler Seehusen also got three hits and Austin Weis knocked in 3 runs with a pair of hits in the consolation semifinal.

Backed by 11 hits, Mac  Beyer cruised through the 5-inning semifinal. Beyer gave up 6 hits, walked 1 and fanned 1 as Morris punched its ticket to the championship game.

Tyler Seehusen hit a two-out triple driving in Sawyer Tersteeg (double) and Tyler Rock (walk) to tie the score 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh to send the day’s final game into overtime but Providence scored in the top of the ninth to go back in front. Providence right-hander Ryan Tapani checked the Mudhens on 4 hits while fanning 14. He walked five.
