Willmar’s Martins, Hanson receive CLC’s weekly nod

Recognized by the Central Lakes Conference office in St. Cloud this week were these Willmar Cardinals athletes as Performers of the Week:

Girls Soccer — Senior goalie Jordan Martins held three opponents scoreless with a total 17 saves.

Girls Cross Country — Junior Sam Hanson placed second at the Moorhead Spuds Invite.

WCER offers karate

Korean Karate is being offered by Willmar Community Education and Recreation Mondays starting Sept. 9-Nov. 18 at the middle school stage by Jen Thorpe and Thursdays Sept. 12-Nov. 21 by Dan Hanson.

Cowpokes saddle up for high school rodeo at Lac qui Parle County fair

The Region 2 High School Rodeo saddles up Saturday and Sunday at Madison during the Lac qui Parle County Fair.

Participants are coming from Wisconsin and Iowa, as well as all of Minnesota. There is both a junior high and senior high division.

Performances are 1:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is included in the fair admission.

The stock contractor is Triple B Rodeo of Maynard. Events include Barrels, Bareback, Saddle Bronc, Steer Wrestling and Team Roping.

Stingrays’ swim club tryouts Monday

The Willmar Stingrays swim club is holding tryouts on Monday at 6 p.m. at the Willmar High School pool.

The tryouts are for swimmers new to the club and they need to register at the Stingrays’ web site at

Karsee Knutson top athlete at St. Kate’s

St. Catherine junior setter Karsee Knutson of New London on Wednesday was named Wildcats Athlete of the Week.

The 5-foot-9 NLS graduate made the All-Tournament team at the Saint Mary’s University Sugarloaf Classic in Winona after posting a career-best 22 assists to open the season in a 3-1 loss to Lakeland College. In the next match, a 3-2 loss to UW-Stout, she supplied a new-best 24 assists, plus 20 digs and 4 ace serves for the day.

She added 29 assists on Sunday as the Wildcats went 1-1. Knutson had 169 assists as a sophomore, third on the team.

Bernhagen notches ace at Valley Golf

Doug Bernhagen of Willmar launched his first career hole-in-one Wednesday at Valley Golf Course in Willmar.

Bernhagen used an 8-iron to ace No. 5 from 143 yards out.

It’s the club’s second hole-in-one of the season.

Valley Golf Course to decide championships

Valley Golf Course in Willmar stages its club champions starting today and Friday with Seniors (over 55). The Women’s tourney is Saturday morning and the Men’s Saturday and Sunday.
