Girls soccer: Storm overtake Cardinals

Tribune photo by Rand Middleton Willmar Cardinals’ goalie Jordan Martins makes one of her seven first-half saves on this tight shot by Sauk Rapids midfielder Blair Morrison (18) on Thursday in Willmar.

WILLMAR — The Cardinals scored in the first minute but most of the pressure after that was on the Willmar goals in a 3-1 loss to Sauk Rapids on Thursday.

Forward Shelby Schneider got a nice feed from midfielder Steph Thompson for the Willmar goal.

Willmar coach Chelsea Brown put in a new formation this week to generate more offense. One emphasis was making passes through openings in the defense, which Thompson accomplished.

But the Storm won the territorial advantage the rest of the half outshooting the Cards 7-2 the first 40 minutes and 10-3 for the game.

Jordan Martins made some fine saves in the Willmar goal but the team remained winless in Central Lakes matches.

Willmar is off until Tuesday but the combined boys and girls programs will host a JV 2 tournament this weekend using four fields at the high school.
