Girls soccer: Warriors silence Cards

BRAINERD — The Willmar girls soccer team held a strong Brainerd team scoreless in the first half but the Warriors broke out in the second and downed the Cardinals 3-0 in a Central Lakes Conference game on Thursday.

Three Warriors scored goals and Hannah Lundstrom made 5 saves to earn the win.

The Cardinals improved markedly, having lost to Brainerd 10-1 earlier this season.

Willmar goalie Jordan Martins made 8 saves, Rachel Hardy made 3 defensive saves and Mikayla Johannes made 1.

Brainerd improved to 8-2-1 in the CLC and the Warriors are 10-3-2 overall.

Willmar, now 1-10-3 overall, plays a make-up game at Alexandria at 2 p.m. Saturday before opening the postseason.

Willmar received the No. 13 seed for the upcoming 15-team Section 2A tournament. The Cardinals open the playoffs by playing No. 4 seed Mankato West at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday at Dakota Meadows Middle School in North Mankato. The winner advances to the quarterfinals to play the winner of No. 5 Mankato East and No. 12 Faribault on Saturday, Oct. 12.
