Willmar blanks River Lakes, 2-0

PAYNESVILLE -- Willmar scored two power play goals in the third period to beat River Lakes 2-0 in Central Lakes Conference boys hockey action Tuesday.

The conference-opening victory gives the Cardinals a 2-0 record overall. River Lakes suffered its first defeat of season (2-1) and is 1-1 in league action.

Jake Sobieck scored an unassisted goal with the extra skater with 8:45 left in the third, then Jay Bredberg added an insurance goal with 3:13 left on assists from Rory Schneider and Landon Peterson.

"It was a good, fast-paced game, up and down the ice," said Willmar coach Dan Tollefson.

Cardinals goalie Ben Leitch turned away 23 shots. Tollefson said Leitch had a couple of key saves to preserve the shutout.

Willmar will open its home schedule against Sauk Rapids at 7 p.m. Friday, then will host New Ulm in a Saturday matinee at 1:30 p.m.
