Willmar pastes Marshall to break out of losing skid

MARSHALL -- The Willmar boys hockey team broke out of a three-game losing slump with a offensive outburst in the second period to smash Marshall 8-2 in a non-conference contest Monday.

The Cardinals (3-3) stopped a slide in which they scored only two goals over nine periods. Willmar resumes action at its own Bus Cup Invitational at 8 p.m. Dec. 29 against the River Lakes Stars.

Marshall came out of the gates strong and took a 2-0 lead, but the Cardinals fought back to even the game at the end of the period.

"We came out flat and they were taking it to us, but we changed some things and started winning the races (to the puck) and the kids took it to them," said Willmar coach Dan Tollefson.

Willmar even spread the success around. Six players scored goals for the Cardinals.

Jay Bredberg and Trent Fader scored two each. Matt Odom, Liam Johnston and Gabe Amon added two assists apiece. Amon also scored the goal which tied the game.

Willmar goalie Ben Leitch turned away 16 of 18 shots on goal.
