Willmar upends Brainerd

BRAINERD -- Led by Taylor Filipek and Jordan Smith, the Willmar Cardinals blew by Brainerd 70-52 on Thursday in Central Lakes Conference boys basketball.

Each had struck for 15 points by halftime, which ended with the Cardinals leading 42-21.

Willmar, which was coming off a one-point loss to St. Cloud Tech on Tuesday, improves to 9-2 in the CLC and 13-5 overall.

Montevideo plays at Willmar on Saturday evening in a non-conference game.

Brainerd (3-9, 4-10) had an early 9-5 lead, but the Cardinals went on an 18-2 run for a 23-11 lead.

The second half started with another 13-4 run for the Cardinals, who built a 28-point advantage at 53-25.

Willmar emptied the bench with 10 minutes left in the game.

Filipek finished with 21 points and Smith 18. The two combined for seven three-pointers in just 10 shots as they got clear looks over the Warrior defenders.

"Those two just really fed off each other," said Willmar coach Steve Grove. "They were just not going to miss.

"But this was a team effort. Jordan and Taylor stood out, but the rest of team was great at getting them the ball."

Jim Neis led the suppliers with six assists. Brian Reeves added eight points and Ryan Filipek five rebounds to go with six points.

Willmar shot 51 percent to 34 percent for Brainerd. Tom Fairbanks and Sam Feyder each scored eight for the Warriors, who were coming off a win over Moorhead on Tuesday.
