Granite Falls Legion advances to District 7, Division II Final Four

SACRED HEART -- Granite Falls scored five times in the bottom of the first inning without the benefit of a hit and went on to douse Montevideo 10-5 Sunday in the championship of the Southwest Pod of the District 7, Division II Legion baseball playoffs.

Granite Falls edged Cottonwood 5-4 with a two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh on Saturday.

Granite Falls opens the Final Four against Benson on Tuesday in Montevideo.

Trailing 4-2, Granite Falls closed within 4-3 with a run in the sixth, then won with two runs in the seventh without a hit.

Walks to the first two batters in the seventh were followed by consecutive wild pitches that let a run in to tie the game. An error then allowed the winning run to score.

Derek Dyrdahl worked two hitless innings of relief for the win. He walked none and struck out four.

Phil Johnson was 2-for-3 with an RBI for Granite.

Ryan Tostenson went 3-for-3, including a three-run homer in the second inning, and drove in four runs to lift Montevideo.

Colton Vien went 2-for-2 for the winners.

Justin Fox was 4-for-4, including a pair of doubles, for Minneota.

Troy Hendrickson pitched six innings for the win, allowing six hits and three earned runs, while striking out seven.

Joe Bednar uncorked a two-run homer in the sixth inning and Colton Vien went 2-for-2 with two RBI to spark Montevideo.

Cam Vien earned the win, giving up five hits and one run over six innings of work. He walked one and struck out four before giving way to Colton Vien, who hurled a hitless seventh.
