KMS' Bauman among 10 finalists for Minnesota Mr. Football Award

Joel Bauman, the area's all-time single-season and career-rushing leader, is one of 10 finalists for the Minnesota Mr. Football Award.

Bauman, who gained 7,479 yards in his career for Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg, is a three-time All-Area running back/linebacker. He ran for a single-season record 2,941 yards as a junior en route to helping the Fighting Saints win the Class A state title with a 13-0 record. He gained 1,408 yards on the ground in nine games as a senior.

The other finalists are: Beau Allen, a noseguard/fullback from Minnetonka; Jacob Brusehaver, a running back/linebacker from Hutchinson; John Crockett, a running back from Totino-Grace; Seantrel Henderson, a two-way tackle from Cretin-Derham Hall; Ben Henson, a two-way linemen from Buffalo; Brandon Marquart, a running back/wide receiver/quarterback from Champlin Park; Ryan Tri, a wide receiver/cornerback from Eden Valley-Watkins; Zach Vraa, a wide receiver/cornerback from Rosemount; and Zach Zenner, a quarterbac/running back/wide receiver from Eagan.

The Minnesota Mr. Football Award winner will be named at the Mr. Football banquet sponsored by the Minnesota Football Coaches Association on December 6th at noon at the Doubletree Hotel in St. Louis Park.

Varmah Sonie of Apple Valley won the award last year.

New coaches

There are several new winter sports coaches in the area this season, including three among the 21 coverage teams in girls basketball.

Brady DeBaere is the new Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg girls basketball coach, replacing Jeff Holtkamp. Jacob Heimerman is tne new girls basketball coach at Paynesville, replacing Jen Andriest. And Anthony Dehler takes over for Adam Foslien as the girls hoops coach at Renville County West.

Steve Schirm, a former All-Area guard for Appleton, is the new Lac qui Parle Valley boys basketball coach. He replaces Robyn Radermacher.

The only new wrestling coach is Ron Reszel at Montevideo, taking over for Chris Weber.

In boys hockey, Matt Melbie is the new River Lakes coach in place of Jeff Boonstra.

Chad Akerson takes over for Rick Dahle as the girls hockey coach in Willmar.

Benson's Hedman honored in 3AA

Benson head volleyball coach Erick Hedman was named the Section 3AA Volleyball Coach of the Year after guiding the Braves to a school record 26 wins this season. Benson also won the West Central South Conference title and reached the Section 3AA-North title match before losing to Montevideo.

Kelly Matthies-Carlson of BOLD was named the Section 3AA Assistant Coach of the Year.
