Willmar subdues Fergus Falls

FERGUS FALLS -- Another solid performance from the free-throw line helped Willmar collect its third straight win of the season as the Cardinals made 17 of their last 19 trips to the line en route to upending Fergus Falls 58-32 Tuesday in a Central Lakes Conference girls basketball game.

Overall Willmar (1-0, 3-0) was 21-for-28 (75 percent) from the charity stripe in its CLC opener. Mariel Aamot was a perfect 6-for-6 from the line, while Hannah Smith, who led all scorers with 18 points, was 5-for-6.

Fergus Falls (0-1, 0-2) owned a brief 10-7 lead before Smith and the Cardinals stormed ahead. Smith netted seven points in an 11-2 run that Willmar pieced together midway through the first half to stay in front for good. Smith drained three 3-pointers and had 15 points in the first half.

"Hannah was kind of our offense in the first half, getting us going," said Willmar coach Brad Atchison. "In the second half they were chasing her all around and that opened looks inside for Jena (Thompson) and (Alex) Lippert."

The Otters, who got as close a six early in the second half, wasted opportunities at the free-throw line to stay in the game as they were only 5-for-17 from the line.

Thompson added 13 points -- nine in the second half -- eight rebounds and five assists for the Cardinals, who are at CLC rival Sauk Rapids on Friday.
