Girls Hockey: Willmar notches 6th straight win

ST. PETER -- Becca Freese had a hat trick Saturday as red-hot Willmar skated past St. Peter 7-1 in a non-conference girls hockey game for its sixth straight win.

Willmar (6-2) scored three times in the opening period with Freese scoring twice and Erin Sheehan tallying once.

The line of Freese, Sheehan and Kenzie Dahle accounted for five of the team's seven goals.

"We got great efforts from that line," said Willmar coach Chad Akerson. "And the defense got to skate with the puck and get up in the offensive zone a little more than usual."

Willmar opened the season with a pair of lopsided losses before going on the current streak.

"If you would have told me that after eight games we would be 6-2," said Akerson, "I would have said 'done deal'. The girls have really worked hard and are playing well."

Freese and Ali Sing scored in the second period and Dahle and Sing scored in the third stanza. Sheehan had a pair of assists.

Bailey Young stopped 13 shots in the Willmar net.

Willmar had 25 shots on goal.

The Cardinals host Alexandria in a Central Lakes Conference doubleheader on Tuesday. The girls play at 5:15 p.m. and the boys take on Alexandria at 7 p.m.
