WILLMAR -- The Benson Braves won third place at the Bremer Bank Holiday Classic beating Fond Du Lac 76-57 on Monday evening.

Ten players scored for the Braves (3-3), who led 44-22 at halftime.

The Ogichida (3-3), or Warriors, got as close as nine points of the lead with five minutes left. Play got a little sloppy down the stretch and the Braves pulled away again.

Jeff Berens paced the Braves with 18 points. Sam Peterson added 15, Cody Jaeger 10, Keagan Pangrac nine and Derek Hilleren eight.

The Warriors were led by Travis Brown with 23 points and Lee St. John with 16. Fond du Lac coach Andrew Depoe had only to subs to work with but his players worked hard throughout.

"We have 13 players in all," said Depoe, "but these are the committed ones."

It's only the second year of organized ball for players at the reservation school, which joined the Minnesota State High School League last year.

Benson coach Roger Lindahl had his team run plays much of the time, otherwise the Braves likely would have posted more points.

Benson's leading scorer Brennan Kent didn't dress. He rolled his ankle early in Saturday's semifinal but is expected back next week.
