WILLMAR -- A slow start and too many penalties caught up to the Willmar boys hockey team Thursday in a 4-1 Central Lakes Conference loss to Sauk Rapids.

The Cardinals (5-3, 10-5) got off only three shots and committed three of its eight penalties in the first period.

The win is the seventh straight for Sauk Rapids (6-3, 8-7-1).

Willmar beat the Storm 2-1 Dec. 10 at Sauk Rapids.

The second penalty resulted in the first score of the game, a power-play goal by the Storm's Ethan Prow. Michael Rutar scored on a breakaway about 2½ minutes later to put Willmar in a 2-0 hole.

"That got us off to a bad start and it caught up to us in the end," Willmar coach Dan Tollefson said of the penalties.

In the second period, the Cardinals warmed up a little and scored their only goal with 3:18 left, courtesy of Grant Schow from Liam Johnston.

Penalties ruled the final period as the teams were whistled for eight infractions. Sauk Rapids scored two more goals, both by Eric Peckskamp.

"With that many penalties, it was hard to get anything going," Tollefson noted.
