Amateur Baseball Roundup: Vien tosses 2-hitter in 10-0 win for first-place Montevideo

MONTEVIDEO — Colton Vien tossed a two-hitter Wednesday with nine strikeouts and no walks to spark Land O’ Ducks South Division-leading Montevideo to a 10-0 win over Minneota.

Mitch Christensen’s two-run single in the first inning was just the start for Montevideo (8-2 in league) as the Spartans sent up 14 batters in the second to produce another eight runs on seven hits.

Eldon Evans had three hits with Christensen and Joe Bednar adding two each for Montevideo, which has a week off until host DuMont on July 9. Joe Schlagel added two RBI.

Atwater 12, Willmar 2

The Chuckers scored five runs in the fifth inning to expand a 4-2 lead they had entering the inning. Michael Malvin’s two-run single highlighted the frame.

Atwater outhit the visiting Rails 9-4 with Justin Schroeder and Brian Kingery collecting two each. Matt Tanner supplied an RBI double in a three-run first.

The Rails’ only offense came in the first when Tyler Brower singled to lead off the game and came home on Josh Oestreich’s home run down the left-field line.

Atwater starter Jordan Tanner struck out four and gave up four hits and the two earned runs in six innings of work to pick up the win. Willmar starter Derek Weiss was tagged with the loss after allowing eight hits and nine runs — four earned — while walking four in 4.1 innings.

Atwater hosts New London-Spicer on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. for the County Line League championship. Willmar also plays Sunday, hosting Bird Island at 1:30 p.m.

Bird Island answered Dassel-Cokato’s three-run first inning with a three-run frame of its own in the second, but the Bullfrogs then scored seven runs in the third to take control.

The Bullfrogs pounded out 16 hits with Logan Swann pacing the attack with a 4-for-5 performance. Winning pitcher Shawn Dollerschell added three hits, while Dylan Gass, Riley Kramer and Andrew Brooks had two more each.

Tyler Seehusen knocked in three runs with a sacrifice fly in the second and a single in the third.
