Ridgewater sweeps home opener with two routs over Vermilion
WILLMAR -- Ridgewater started the MCAC Cross-Over Tournament with a sweep of Vermillion Friday at Bill Taunton Stadium.
The Warriors (7-6) won the first game with a 10-run outburst in the fourth inning, 10-0. Ridgewater clubbed four home runs in the second game to win, 15-5.
The Warriors face Itasca for a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. today in Willmar.
Ridgewater broke the first game open on Shane Kampsen's bases-loaded triple to the left-center field gap and expanded the lead on Kelvin Nelson's two-run home run to right field.
Matt Christensen cruised to the five-inning victory by giving up just two hits and striking out five.
In the second game, the Warriors pounded out 17 hits including home runs from Kampsen, Nelson, Christensen and Cameron Lehner. Ridgewater scored at lead one run in every inning but the third.
Luke Frauendienst and Benji Hager had three hits each to lead the Warriors. Chris Braaten pitched six innings for the win, striking out six.
In the other tournament games Friday, St. Cloud Technical beat Itasca 5-4, but the Vikings came back in the second game for a 6-3 win.
