Prep Baseball: Litchfield, Paynesville to meet in 6AA-West semis

Litchfield and Paynesville advanced after winning Section 6AA-West quarterfinal baseball games on Tuesday.

Litchfield topped Melrose 6-2 in one quarterfinal game, while Paynesville routed Minnewaska 12-1.

Rocori downed New London-Spicer 14-1 and Albany defeated Sauk Centre 9-2 in the other quarterfinals games.

Rocori now faces Albany at 5 p.m. today in St. Cloud. Paynesville and Litchifeld meet at 7 p.m.

Rocori 13, NLS 1

Rocori (17-3) took advantage of nine walks and two hit batsmen to score at least two runs in each inning.

The only run for NLS (7-12) came in the second inning. Mitch Ejnik doubled, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Andrew Clancy's grounder to second.

Mathias Butala pitched all five innings for the Spartans, allowing three hits, striking out five and walking one. He also had a double and two RBI.

Litchfield 6, Melrose 2

Brad Smith tossed a complete-game three-hitter with seven strikeouts to spark the Dragons.

Litchfield compiled 11 hits against two Melrose hurlers. Shane Gutormson, Eric Hulterstrum, Aaron Valiant and Clint Hannes had two hits apiece.

Despite 11 hits and three walks, Litchfield left only four runners on base due to timely hitting.

Valiant had a run-scoring single in the second inning, Hulterstrum drove in a run with a single in the third, Gutormson had a RBI single in the fifth, and Hannes had a run-scoring single in the sixth.

Paynesville 12, Minnewaska 1

Justin Wendlandt highlighted a five-run third inning for Paynesville with a grand slam as the Bulldogs scored in every inning.

Aaron Savelkoul struck out nine and gave up just three hits in his complete-game win. Savelkoul also doubled twice at the plate to drive in three runs.

Casey Hess paced the 11-hit attack for the Bulldogs by going 3-for-4, including an RBI double. Jordan Lieser also doubled in a run and Wendlandt preceded his home run with an RBI single in the second.

Taylor Kollman singled in Shane Bosek in the fourth for Minnewaska's only run.
