Twins take Wimmers with first draft pick

The Minnesota Twins have selected Ohio State right-hander Alex Wimmers with their first-round draft pick, No. 21 overall.

Wimmers went 9-0 with a 1.60 ERA for the Buckeyes in 2010. Scouts say he does not have overpowering stuff, but he does have great control. That makes him an ideal fit for the Twins, who stress limiting walks and throwing strikes throughout their organization.

Wimmers had 86 strikeouts and only 23 walks in 73 innings pitched this season as a junior. He did not allow a home run and held opposing hitters to a .218 batting average.

Wimmers is a native of Cincinnati.
