Amateur Baseball: Koenen, Sacred Heart win pitchers' duel, 1-0

SACRED HEART -- Matt Koenen tossed an one-hit shutout to outduel Aaron Savelkoul as Sacred Heart edged Paynesville 1-0 Sunday in a Cornbelt League game.

Jamie Paul singled just over the head of Sacred Heart shortstop Ryan Hebrink with one out in the first inning to account for the Pirates' only hit. Koenen then allowed just three other base runners for the rest of the game. Koenen had six strikeouts and walked three, including two in the seventh, which was Paynesville's only threat to produce a run.

The Saints (9-4, 15-4) scored the lone run in the first when Tyler Kleinhuizen scored on Mike Kuschel's sacrifice fly to center field. Kleinhuizen drew a walk with one out before advancing to second on Hebrink's single. Jeremy Hinderks then drew a walk to load the bases.

Kuschel singled twice later in the game as Sacred Heart was held to three hits as Savelkoul matched Koenen pitch-for-pitch. Koenen struck out four and issued three walks in eight innings of work for Paynesville (2-6, 2-7).

Starbuck 6, Milroy 5

Ryan Gandrud's single scored the tying run in the bottom of the 10th, then a wild pitch allowed the winning run to score with two outs for Starbuck (5-2, 6-5).

Milroy (6-3, 14-4) scored four runs in the ninth to tie the game and one in the 10th to take a short-lived lead. All the Yankees' runs were unearned.

Gandrud went 3-for-5 with two RBI and Andy Toop was 4-for-6 for the Stars.

Nick Sutton pitched to one batter in the 10th to get the win. Jon Hoffmann allowed five runs on 11 hits in 9Xc innings. He struck out six and walked one.

Brian Dolan had three hits, with Chris Eichten and Matt Bauer adding two hits each to lead Milroy.

Starbuck beat Norway Lake-Sunburg 8-2 in non-league game Saturday. Statistics were not available.

Jordan Smith allowed four hits over six innings and Zach Nelson gave up two hits in the last three as the Rockets recorded the shutout.

Smith struck out four without a walk and Nelson had three strikeouts with one walk.

Jason Meyer hit solo home runs in the first and fifth innings to lead Raymond (9-0, 16-2). Jed Nelson hit a two-run double in the sixth and had two hits overall.

Norway Lake-Sunburg 2-6, 3-7) had the bases loaded with two outs in first inning but Smith got out of the jam with a strikeout. Brant Beckman had two hits to lead the Lakers.

Scott Rambow led off the ninth inning for New London-Spicer (3-4, 9-5) with a solo home run to pad the Twins' lead. Cody Connors' sacrifice fly and Jack Hartley's RBI single later in the frame gave the Twins a 7-3 lead.

Cody Fruin doubled in the bottom half of the ninth and scored on Phil Johnson's single to pull the Kilowatts (2-8, 4-8)?within one. But two runners were stranded when Tyler Dammann ended the game with a fly ball.

Austen Hadley, who got the win in relief, ignited the Twins' 12-hit attack by going 3-for-5. Craig Listul doubled and singled for Granite Falls.

Jake Suter opened the scoring early for the Kilowatts by slugging a two-run homer in the first inning. Suter then drove in another pair of runs with a single in the fifth.

Taylor Tollefson capped the scoring with a two-run single in the sixth.
