Jakel leads Sacred Heart Legion to title

GRANITE FALLS -- Sacred Heart tipped Montevideo 1-0 with a run in the bottom of the seventh on Sunday to win the Southwest sub-district of American Legion District 7-II.

Sacred Heart will face Morris at Montevideo at 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday in the first-round of the double-elimination district showdown.

Granite went up 9-7 in their half of the seventh. Granite starter Tyler Sand got the first two hitters for Montevideo on three pitches.

But then a walk, a hit batter and short single loaded the bases. Sand walked in a run and then more runs scored on a two-run throwing error.

Montevideo trailed 8-2 early but Troy Hendrickson, in relief of Christian Brabender, threw 6Zc solid innings to let his team get back in the game.

Steve Jakel scored the game's only run with one-out in the bottom of the seventh.

Jakel threw a shutout on the mound, scattering seven hits. He walked two and fanned one.

Christian Brabender was also sharp for Montevideo. He gave up only four hits, walked four and struck out two.

Jakel singled leading off the seventh, was bunted to second and scored on an infield error, the only error of the game by either team.

Kyle Pederson's two-out solo home run to left field in the bottom of the seventh lifted Benson.

Kerkhoven had knotted the score 4-4 in the top of the seventh.

Brennan Kent went the route on a three-hitter. All four Kerkhoven runs were unearned.

Jordan Smith's single to center, his third hit of the game, knocked in Jordan Ruter from second base with the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth. Ruter had reached on an error and advanced to second on another Benson miscue.

Smith then pitched a scoreless seventh to get the win after Caleb Hanson had thrown the first seven innings.
