VFW Baseball: Willmar falls to Madison, 5-2
MADISON -- Brandon Bornhorst hit a go-ahead three-run homer and pitched seven strong innings on the mound to help Madison upend Willmar 5-2 in the quarterfinals of the District 5 VFW baseball playoffs Tuesday.
Madison now moves into the semifinals of the winner's bracket on Friday while Willmar (9-6) moves into the loser's bracket for an 11 a.m. game Saturday in Madison.
After Michael Fuchs scored on Dean Stier's single in the fifth inning to give Willmar a 2-1 lead, Bornhorst slugged a three-run homer to put Madison in control.
Bornhorst held Willmar to five hits while striking out five and walking three. Stier worked the first five innings for Willmar, striking out nine but walking six. Brandon Reuvers relieved and struck out four in the sixth inning.
Stier scored the first run of the game on Damon Ruter's single in the first. Paul Blom added an RBI for Madison.
