Rockets keep going; Saints out

BIRD ISLAND - In dramatic fashion, the Rockets move on but the Saints are done.

The Cornbelt South's two state qualifiers lost and won Class C elimination-round games Saturday at Lions Memorial Park.

The Raymond Rockets, who trailed 4-0 after four innings, scored two in the eighth and three in the ninth to overcome Lastrup 7-6. Jordan Smith's bases-loaded single tied the game 6-6 and Kyle Knott's base hit won it with no outs in the bottom of the ninth. Smith, who is a sophomore at UM-Duluth, after giving up two runs in the top of the ninth to the Little Falls-area team got the win in relief.

Sacred Heart, which nudged Raymond in the playoffs for the championship of Region 9C, trailed Howard Lake 9-3 through seven. But the Saints scored 7 times in the top of the eighth, capped by Jeremy Hinderk's two-run homer, to go in front 10-9.

The Orphans came up with a run in the bottom of the eighth to tie it and one more in the ninth to win, 11-10. That eliminated the Saints. The Rockets and Orphans play at 1 p.m. Sunday in Bird Island. The winner then plays Moorhead, scheduled for 3:30 p.m., to determine who advances to the championship on Labor Day.
