ACGC, Dawson-Boyd get No. 1 seeds for football playoffs

Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City and Dawson-Boyd are the only area teams that got a No. 1 seed for the prep football playoffs that start Tuesday. All quarterfinal-round games involving area teams start at 7 p.m.

Co-champions of the Little Sioux Conference, Dawson-Boyd (7-1) will take on winless Ortonville in Section 5A. Also in 5A, No. 4 MACCRAY (5-3) will host No. 5 Lakeview (4-4) and No. 7 Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg (1-7) will play at No. 2 Minneota (7-1), which is the defending champion in Class A.

ACGC (4-4) received a bye in the quarterfinal round of the five-team 4A field and won't play until Oct. 30 when it hosts the St. Agnes-West Lutheran winner at Grove City. Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa (2-6), which also got a first-round bye in 4A, was given the No. 3 seed and it too won't play until Oct. 30; at No. 2 Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity (3-5).

Receiving a No. 2 seed were New London-Spicer, the defending Class AAA state champion, in 6AAA and Morris in 5AA, which features seven area teams.

In 6AAA, NLS (7-1) will host No. 7 St. Cloud Cathedral (3-5) and No. 5 Litchfield (3-5) will meet No. 4 Foley (4-4) at St. Cloud State. Unbeaten Albany got the No. 1 seed.

Hosting first-round games in 5AA area Morris (6-2) with No. 7 Benson (3-5), No. 3 BOLD with No. 6 Minnewaska (4-4) and No. 4 Lac qui Parle Valley (6-2) with No. 5 Yellow Medicine East (4-4). Eden Valley-Watkins got the No. 1 seed with an 8-0 record.

Also at home for the first round is Willmar in 2AAAA. The No. 3-seeded Cardinals (5-3) will host No. 6 Hutchinson (4-4), which ousted Willmar in the semifinals last year. Unbeaten Mankato West was given the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye for the third straight year.

In 3AAA, No. 7 Montevideo (2-6) is at No. 2 Glencoe-Silver Lake (6-2) and unbeaten Dassel-Cokato is the No. 1 seed.

Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart (2-6) is the No. 7 seed in 2A and it will play at No. 2 New Ulm Cathedral (7-1). Unbeaten Springfield is the No. 1 seed.

Hancock (0-8), the only Nine-Man team in the area, is the No. 8 seed in Section 3 and will play at No. 1 and unbeaten Edgerton/Ellsworth.

New London-Spicer was the only team from the area to reach the state tournament last year.
