College Wrestling: Peralta first at Warrior Open

WILLMAR -- Travis Peralta won the 174-pound weight class at the Ridgewater Wrestling Open on Saturday.

Peralta was the lone Warrior to finish first in the meet.

Ridgewater had at least two wrestlers at six of the nine weight classes (the 184 and 197 classes were combined for this open).

Peralta, a sophomore from Thief River Falls, won 7-2 in his opening match, 8-2 in his semifinal bout and 8-1 in the championship against Ben McPhail of St. Cloud State.

Placing third for the Warriors was Lonny Boonshu at 125 pounds, Javior Portillo at 133 pounds and Trever Krueger at 165 pounds.

Ridgewater had an open weight at 141 pounds.

Derek Carlson was 2-0 at heavyweight and reached the championship against Lee Hiltner, but there was no championship match.

Ridgewater concludes the home portion of it season schedule and will be on the road for the next five meets before the region qualifying tournament begins Feb. 12 in Itasca. The nationals are Feb. 25-25 in Spokane.

Ridgewater will wrestle the Concordia (Moorhead) JV on Wednesday in Moorhead.
