Boys Hockey: Willmar back on winning track; tops Fergus

FERGUS FALLS -- Grant Schow's goal with 4:51 left in the game lifted Willmar to a 2-1 win over Fergus Falls in a Central Lakes Conference boys hockey game Tuesday.

Trey Tollefson cleared the puck from Willmar's zone, and Schow carried it into the Otter's zone, got a shot off, got his own rebound and put in into the net.

Cardinals coach Dan Tollefson said both goals Tuesday represent how Willmar (7-3-3, 11-7-3) has been playing over the last half of the season.

"We've been playing with a lot more determination and grit. Both goals tonight were that. Gabe's goal wasn't cute, he just knocked it into the net," Tollefson said.

Amon's goal -- Schow got the assist -- gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead in the second period.

Fergus Falls tied the game just 21 seconds into the third on Joe Nethe's goal, then Willmar netminder Christian Yrttimaa made two big saves at the end of the game to secure the win.

"The whole game was a grinding game," said Tollefson. "Fergus had two great scoring opportunities at the end of the game and (Yrttimaa) just stuck the saves."

Willmar hosts St. Cloud Apollo on Thursday in another Central Lakes Conference game.
