Hancock girls heading to state

MOORHEAD -- Hancock overcame a cold night at the free-throw line and upended Ada-Borup 44-39 in the Section 6A girls basketball championship game Saturday at Concordia College.

The game was moved From Friday night to Saturday afternoon because of snow and high winds.

"We were all fired up to play on Friday and then it's kind of a letdown when they postponed the game," said Hancock coach Jodi Holleman. "But the girls came back the next day and played an excellent first half."

This is the seventh time that Hancock has qualified for the Class A state tournament, the last coming in 2007 when they finished second. Hancock will opend against Goodhue at 11 a.m. Thursday at Williams Arena in Minneapolis.

Holleman remarked on Thursday that if the Owls could hold Ada-Borup under 40 points, as they did in a 40-37 win over Parkers Prairie in the sub-section championship, her team would win. She was right on.

Hancock bolted to a 25-16 halftime lead, holding the Cougars to just seven field goals in 20 attempts. The Owls made 10-of-22 shots from the floor in the first 18 minutes.

Illissa Koehl had an oustanding game, scoring 19 points to go along with four steals. Koehl made 9-of-14 free throws.

Courtney Greiner had 10 points and 13 rebounds. Leading scorer Kendra Schmidgall was double-teamed most of the night and also say eight minutes with foul trouble. She finished with seven points and three steals.

Ada-Borup (25-3) was led by Megan Kolness with 16 points.
