Krause fires blanks again as Lady Warriors rip Riverland

WILLMAR -- Andrea Krause spun her seventh shutout of the season and Ridgewater rebounded after losing its first game in two weeks on Thursday by blanking MCAC Southern Division rival Riverland 11-0 in five innings in the first game of a doubleheader Friday.

The second game was halted due to rain after Riverland finished batting in the top half of the third inning. Ridgewater was leading 11-5 and the game will be made up at a later date since it's a division matchup.

The Lady Warriors, now 23-6 overall and 15-2 in the South, had more runs score on bases-loaded walks (six) in the opener than they had hits (five) in the entire game as Riverland pitcher Dani Felton issued 11 walks in all.

Krause gave up just two singles and struck out five in the five innings en route to improving to 9-0 in division games and 13-2 overall.

All 11 runs and four of Ridgewater's five hits came in the second inning. Krause singled twice, the second knocking in a run, Brandi Bodin slugged a three-run double and Aimee Johnson singled in a run.

Bodin also doubled in the first as her 2-for-2 performance at the plate raised her batting average on the season to a team-leading .547.

The defense behind Krause made a couple of nice plays to preserve the shutout. In the fourth, shortstop Emily Roelike made a diving backhand stab of a hard grounder in the hole, got up and threw out the batter at first. And in the fifth, second baseman Whitley Strei reached high to stab a line drive for the second out.

Rain defused an offensive fireworks show by Ridgewater in the second game. Roelike and Bodin hit back-to-back solo home runs to start out the home half of the first inning and Roelike knocked in five more runs in the second behind a three-run homer and a two-run double.

The Lady Warriors will host Rochester, second place in the South, in a doubleheader today starting at 2 p.m. The teams split a twin bill on April 8 in Rochester.
