Ridgewater softball team nabs division crown again

WILLMAR -- The Ridgewater Lady Warriors split a twin bill with Minnesota West on Friday, winning 3-0 before falling 6-4 at the college field.

The first-game result clinched the Southern Division title for Ridgewater (20-3, 28-7).

That means Willmar will be the host site for the four-team Region 13A tournament May 12-13.

Today the team travels to St. Cloud to play Riverland in the continuation of game halted by rain on April 22. Play will resume at the Waite Park recreation fields in the bottom of the third with the Lady Warriors leading 11-5. Riverland is in town to play St. Cloud Technical College later in the day.

In the first game on Friday, Andrea Krause threw a seven-hit shutout with one walk and nine strikeouts for the win.

Ridgewater scored twice in the first when Emily Roelike walked and scored on Brandi Bodin's double. Sara Beyer followed with an RBI single. Bevin Williams' bases-loaded walk in the fifth inning made it 3-0.

In the second game, consecutive doubles by Roelike and Bodin, followed by consecutive singles by Beyer and Williams, produced two runs in the first inning.

But the Bluejays went ahead for good with a four-run rally in the third. The big hit was a three-run homer by LoRel Christensen, who also singled twice.

Ridgewater had two on with two outs in the last of the seventh when Bluejays' center fielder Alysan Droager made a running, snowcone catch of Williams' deep drive to end the game.

Shannon Heitz took the loss on an eight-hitter. Bodin finished the twin bill 4-for-7 with three doubles and three RBI.
