Prep softball: Willmar falls to Alexandria

WILLMAR -- The Willmar Cardinals lost their fourth straight game this week 11-4 on Thursday to Central Lakes rival Alexandria at the high school field.

Willmar (7-7, 9-10) is scheduled to play its sixth game in five days today, at Murdock, against unbeaten Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg.

Willmar pitcher Heather Horning is clearly worn out. Alexandria (6-5, 11-6) got to her for 16 hits over six innings."

"She hurting," said Brent Pederson, the Willmar coach. "She had thrown 154 pitches" to go with high pitch counts all week.

Offensively, Willmar's best inning was the third when Sarah Roehl doubled to the center-field fence and Horning followed with a ball off the fence in left field for another double, plating Roehl to make it 6-2.

Alexandria pitcher Taylor Ellingson allowed eight hits anf five walks, while striking out 10.

Junior Lauren Trumm paced the Alex attack with four hits including two doubles. Mikayla Lucas went 3-for-3, Sam Brown hit a pair of doubles and Emily Kuennen, another freshman, hit a solo homer.

Willmar's No. 3 hitter, shortstop Sara Kallhoff, missed the game with illness.
