Burgett garners top prize at MD/LD 5k

WILLMAR -- Fourteen-year-old Ben Burgett of Spicer led a record field at the Memorial Day/Law Day 5k Run/Walk on Saturday morning.

The Community Christian School eighth grader paced a pack of over 250 runners and walkers from the Flags of Honors, around the Robbins Island Loop and along the puddled Foot Lake Trail to the highway bridge and back in ideal conditions.

Burgett covered the route in 17:41, one second more than Andy Regnier's winning time a year ago. Regnier, 30, did not defend.

Marty Janning, 46, of Willmar placed second in 18:05, a 1:05 improvement over a year ago when he finished ninth. Jay Halliday, 25, moved up from 14th in 2010 to third place in 18:34.

Jessica Martinez, 29, of Willmar and Kristine Duininck, 37, of Spicer placed 1-2 in the female division for a second straight year.

Duininck made it a tight finish coming in two seconds after Martinez, who reached the line at the beach parking lot at 22:05. That time cut 24 second from her winning time of a year ago. Lori Gehrking placed third.

The sunny, mild morning encouraged 100 walk-ups. The 256 timed finishers included walkers for the first time. Last year 212 participants received a time.

Burgett, who placed 13th last year, ran track this spring for the CCS middle school team. He won the Glacial Lakes Running Series male 11-14 age group in 2010.

2010 Series leaders

Glacial Lakes Running Series director Dan Hubbard announced the 2010 overall and age-group winners following the 5k. In the female division, Martinez was first in total points followed by Deb Hoberg, 44, of Roseland while C.J. Seifert, 18, was first among males, followed by Janning.

Five runners were recognized for competing in all 11 events: David Paulsen, 37, of Willmar; John Vornholt, 43, of New London; Steve Dols, 44, of Kerkhoven; Luther Opjordan, 66, of Milan; and Darin Ditterich, 25, of Willmar.
