Prep Softball: KMS captures 3A crown

MARSHALL -- The Fighting Saints are 21-0 and headed to state for the first time since 2007.

Behind the pitching and hitting combination of sophomores Sam Dunn and Erin Haglund, Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg whipped Wabasso 10-2 on Thursday for the Section 3A softball championship.

Dunn and Haglund were each were 3-for-3 at the plate and together drove in five runs, while teaming up to toss a six-hitter with one walk. Neither Wabasso run was earned.

The Fightin Saints play at Caswell Park in North Mankato 9 a.m. Thursday. They'll face unbeaten Hawley, the 6A champion.

The Fighting Saints finished fifth in the Class A state tournament in 2007.

KMS scored five times in the first inning. With the bases loaded, Courtney Olson drove a fly ball deep to center that hit off the center fielder's glove for an error as all three runners crossed the plate.

Brielle Hauge then singled in Olson. Hauge later scored on a second Wabasso error.

Haglund, who had four RBI, singled in a run in the second inning for a 6-0 KMS lead, and then plated two more runners in the fourth inning with another single.

Brooke Carlson doubled off the fence in the sixth for another run. She scored on a single by Dunn.

Dunn pitched the first three innings allowing only a single by Alyssa Rothmeier.

Haglund went the last four innings walking one and fanning five.
