Willmar, Minn., tops Monte 6-2 in Legion baseball

WILLMAR -- Dean Stier's two-run triple that turned into a round-tripper on an overthrow at third propelled Willmar to a four-run inning on the way to a 6-2 win over Montevideo in District 7 Legion baseball on Wednesday.

Nathan Swoyer pitched five innings for the win. Jake Rambow moved from second base to the hill to finish up with two scoreless innings.

Both teams had six hits. All six runs off Montevideo pitcher Tanner Lindemann were unearned.

Jordan Thompson and Tyler Kuno both doubled for Montevideo.

Willmar players receive honors

Cardinal baseball coach Mark Stier released post-season awards which were announced at the game.

The Cardinal team was named Academic All-State

Gold Champions.

Gold winners have the highest overall GPAs.

Senior shortstop Jake Rambow was named Individual Academic All-State, as chosen by the Minnesota Baseball Coaches Association based on career statistics and GPA.

Named to the All-Section 2AAA were Rambow, senior outfielder Ryan Horning and junior first-baseman Dean Stier.
