Stingers win third straight

WILLMAR -- Two runs scored on Chris Woolley's sixth-inning double put the Willmar Stingers ahead to stay in an 8-5 win over the Rochester Honkers before a crowd of 1,051 at Bill Taunton Stadium Friday.

The Stingers have won three straight games and four of their last five to improve to 12-10 in the second half of the Northwoods League season. The Stingers open a home-and-home two-game set with Alexandria at 7:05 p.m. today in Willmar. The teams play in Alexandria at 6:05 p.m. Sunday.

In the sixth, the Stingers' Jake Stinnett and Blake Shepherd both singled and both scored on Woolley's double. Eduardo Gonzalez later hit a sacrifice fly to score Woolley and put the Stingers up 7-4.

Willmar reliever Chris Gonzales allowed a hit and a walk over the final two innings.

Shepherd, who hit a three-run homer in the second, was 3-for-4 with three runs batted it, and Stinnett had two hits in four trips, Pat Stover was 3-for-3 and Woolley and Gonzalez both had two hits.

Shepherd's blast put the Stingers up 3-1, but the Honkers tied the game with two runs in the fourth and took a brief lead with a run in the fifth.

Stover's run-scoring single in the fifth tied the game again at 4-4. The Honkers added a run in the seventh, but in the Willmar half of the eighth, Gonzalez doubled and later scored in Sean Dwyer's single.
