Smash! Pow! Wow! Demo derby night at the fair

The county fair has something for everyone and upwards of 1,000 fans of demo derby turned out Thursday night at the Kandiyohi County Fairgrounds track to watch a metal on rubber version of Survival of the Fittest.

In the photo, Cory Deters (2x) of Elrosa was the last car -- a '76 AMC Pacer -- moving in the Compact Class after he exploded the radiator of runner-up Dan Truwe (28) of Marshall, about 10 minutes after this shot was taken. The twenty-year-old Deters, who won $600, said this is his sixth year on the crash circuit. Brandon Wensauer (77) took third in Compact.

Drivers also competed in Compact Truck, '80s and Newer Welded and Full-Size Pickups. Derby co-directors brothers Don and Ron Alderman instructed competitors to "keep moving, be aggressive and avoid driver-door hits." Demo-Derby II is Saturday.
