Local amateur baseball teams both fall in Class C state tournament

GLENCOE -- Many amateur baseball fans were thinking this might be the year Sacred Heart and Raymond would play for an eighth time, only this time for a state championship.

Instead, both team's stellar 2011 seasons ended within hours of each other.

Sacred Heart fell to Isanti 2-1 in 10 innings on Saturday in the second round of the Minnesota State Amateur Class C Baseball Tournament.

Raymond couldn't get its offense in gear in the game following the Saints' loss and, as such, couldn't get by Big Lake. The White Caps defeated the Rockets 4-2 on Saturday.

Had the team's won, they would have moved into the tournament's double-elimination brackets, meaning it would have taken two losses to knock them out of the tournament's upcoming rounds.

The Saints finished 26-7 and the Rockets closed out the season 21-11. The teams played seven times this season, including in the Region 11C championship.

Saints fall to Isanti in 10th

The Sacred Heart Saints' season came to an end in broken-hearted fashion.

The Saints gave up two runs in the bottom of the 10th inning and lost 2-1 to Isanti in the Minnesota State Amateur Class C Tournament on Saturday.

The game wasn't exactly a pitchers' duel pitting Jeremy Hinderks against Isanti's Wade Reichmann.

The Saints left 12 men on base and Isanti stranded 21 runners.

"Both teams didn't capitalize on a lot of opportunites, is what happened," said Saints manager Andy Davis.

Despite allowing a total of 25 hits, neither Hinderks nor Reichmann allowed a run until the Saints' Nate Hebrink hit a solo home run in the top of the 10th inning.

But Isanti answered with two runs in the bottom of the 10th on a Patrick Lind double two outs.

Brian Schultz started the rally off by reaching on a error at second. Ben Samuelson reached on an infield single to second to put two on with two out.

Reichmann was the winning pitcher throwing all 10 innings for Isanti giving up 9 hits, 1 earned run, 2 walks and 9 strikeouts.

Hinderks gave up 15 hits over 9Xc innings. Both runs were unearned. He walked four and fanned seven.

Joe Ramberg and Wyatt Soderquist were each 3-for-5 for Isanti.
