Willmar Notebook: Madsen waits word on U.S. Curling Nationals

The Willmar Curling Club applied in July to host the U.S. Curling Nationals in February, 2013, and also the subsequent U.S. Olympic Trials in advance of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Civic Center manager Kevin Madsen believes word may be coming down soon.

The U.S. Curling Association is meeting in the Twin Cities next week.

"I would think they'd be discussing it," Madsen said. "Maybe, they will make a decision."

He has heard that as many as 10 arena organizations are bidding. Most often, the nationals are held in a metropolitan area, like Denver or Philadelphia.

But U.S. Curling knows Willmar, through Madsen, and asked the club and city to bid.

Madsen is sought after for his expertise in making curling ice.

He'll be giving presentations at the Woodbury Arena Sept. 9-11 for the National Seminar for Arena Curling Clubs.

The Civic Center, which opened in Jan. 1980, is one of the busiest in Minnesota for dry-floor events.

"Reports from the arena managers' association show we are the busiest outstate arena in the number of dry-floor events held," Madsen said.

Coming up are an area-wide Sept. 11 church-service memorial program, the annual quilt show the next weekend, followed by the Shrine Circus, the bi-annual Tribune Garage Sale, which also fills the Blue Line Arena and the Municipal Utilities Appreciation Dinner on Oct. 2. A traveling evangelist is booked Oct. 7-9.

Ice-on dates are Oct 14 for the Blue Line and Oct. 31 at the Cardinal Arena.

Cayler is new softball coach

Long-time assistant coach Shannon Cayler has been named head softball coach at Willmar High School.

She takes over for Brent Pederson, who retired from varsity coaching after 26 years.
