Girls hockey: Willmar wins Invitational

WILLMAR -- The Willmar girls hockey team continued its strong start to the season with a 2-1 win over Austin in the Willmar Invitational championship game on Saturday at the Willmar Civic Center.

Willmar's Miranda Roelofs scored the winning goal on the powerplay at 4:20 of the third period. Amelia Amon scored the Cardinals' first goal unassisted at 7:17 of the first period.

Willmar goalie Baylie Young made 24 saves, including 11 in the second period when Austin mustered its best offensive attack.

The Cardinals are now 5-0-1. They defeated Morris/Benson Area on Friday to earn a spot in the championship game.

"We played a complete game against Austin," said Cardinals head coach Jason Mayer. "We killed off five of six Austin powerplays. With our seventh powerplay goal of the year, we continued to play a strong special teams game on both our power play and penalty kill."

The Cardinals play next at Hutchinson on Tuesday.
