College Women's Basketball: Physical Rochester team clips Warriors

Tribune staff report

ROCHESTER -- The Ridgewater women's basketball team fell behind Rochester early and also played with the disadvantage of having one of its top players out with an injury.

As such, a 17-point loss to a physical and talented Rochester team wasn't as dispiriting as it could have been.

The Warriors fell behind by 15 at halftime and, with Shantel Kelly out with an injured shoulder, didn't have the offense to recover in a 76-59 loss Saturday.

"Rochester is a great team," Warriors head coach Carrie Ogdahl said. "They play a real physical game that our kids aren't used to yet."

Kelly and her 16 points per game will be on the shelf until the injury can be evaluated, Ogdahl said.

"That's a big loss in a game like this because we miss her scoring and she is the kind of player who likes to get in there and mix it up," Ogdahl said. "But we had some other players step up and take over some of the scoring."

Mikell Melius led the Warriors with 17 points and Cameo McNeley had 14.

Alicia Koenen had 8 points and led the Warriors with 5 assists and 4 steals. She also had 5 rebounds.

Bobbie Uecker scored 4 points and had a team-high 8 rebounds.

Rochester's Aly Meyer, a 6-foot sophomore, finished with 26 points, 16 rebounds and 3 steals.

Rochester had a 47-36 rebounding advantage, and hit 18 of 27 free throws. Conversely, the Warriors managed just 9 of 19 foul shooting, which Ogdahl said was another factor in Ridgewater's inability to make up ground in the second half. Ridgewater also was limited to just 2 of 15 shooting from the 3-point line.

The Warriors play next at home against Minnesota West at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
