6A Boys Basketball: BBE rolls but seeks even more

BBE center Connor Goodwin powers up and through Henning's Andrew Smith (42) and Zach Torgerson (30) for two of his game-high 22 points in the Jaguars' 60-30 win over Henning in Saturday's Section 6A South Sub-Section semifinals game at the University of Minnesota, Morris. MORRIS -- It says something about the strength and expectations of a team that it can win a sub-section semifinals game by 30 points - while giving up just 30 -- and still be a little disappointed in its performance.

BBE had little trouble with Henning, winning 60-30 in the Section 6A South Sub-Section semifinals on Saturday at the University of Minnesota, Morris.

The Jaguars (28-0) play Battle Lake (25-1) for the sub-section championship at 8 p.m. Tuesday at UMM.

The Jaguars were so dominant on both ends of the floor that they led by 25 points at halftime and several of the Hornets' shots were necessarily desperate, flipped up in the general vicinity of the rim that either glanced harmlessly off the backboard or missed everything altogether.

And yet, there were a few heads shaking outside BBE's post-game locker room.

"I told the kids that it's a good sign that they're a little frustrated after they just won by 30," said BBE head coach Dave Montbriand. "I think some of it is they're not in school (on a Saturday), they're out of their routine and then they're playing in this big gym (UMM's PE Center)."

"I think we just came out a little flat," said BBE center Connor Goodwin, who scored 22 points. "I think we're definitely where we want to be, but we can get better every game. We just need to shoot a little better, make fewer turnovers and know when to pass and when not to."

It takes a trained basketball eye to identify where BBE can get much better. The Jaguars defensive pressure led to several easy baskets early in the game, led by point guard Brian Goodwin, who scored all 12 of his points in the first half.

Connor Goodwin was to the point of being unstoppable when he got the ball down low, and the BBE wings made several nice plays off the dribble. Henning had trouble running any semblance of offense due to the Jaguars' press and traps and the shots they did get were of the low-percentage variety.

So the bar keeps getting set higher.

"I think we played a decent game," Brian Goodwin said. "A lot of our shots weren't going down. I think we can play better defense and keep out turnovers down. We'll be OK if we just don't make mistakes."
