Prep baseball: Kampsen pitches Paynesville into round two

Paynesville starter Jason Kampsen fires during the Bulldogs' Section 6AA East Subsection quarterfinals-round game against Foley on Friday in Paynesville. Kampsen threw a two-hitter and struck out seven in the Bulldogs' 4-0 victory.

PAYNESVILLE -- Josh Bungum led off the game with a home run and it proved to be the only run the Bulldogs would need in their Section 6AA East Subsection game against Foley on Friday.

Bulldogs starter Jason Kampsen threw a complete-game two-hitter and Paynesville advanced to the subsection semifinals with a 4-0 win over the Falcons.

Now, the Bulldogs get another crack at defending Class AA state champion St. Cloud Cathedral on Tuesday in St. Cloud in the subsection semifinals.

"They're a great team," said Paynesville coach Brad Skoglund, whose team lost to the Crusaders 2-1 in St. Cloud on April 24. "The first time we played, it was a heck of game. But they're the defending state champions and they're the champions until someone knocks them off."

Against Foley, Kampsen walked just one and struck out seven.

"Jason threw very well," Skoglund said. "Our defense was good, we got timely hitting and I thought we ran the bases well."

Bungum hit his homer just inside the left field foul pole off Foley starter Mike Plante to stake the Bulldogs to the early lead.

"It was nice to get that, especially in the playoffs," Skoglund said. "In the playoffs, it's so important to get the lead early. It's easier to hit when you're ahead and you can take more chances on the base paths."

Bungum and Weston Brinkman both had two hits, and Kyle Schmidt also singled in Paynesville's fourth run in the fourth inning.

The Bulldogs, the subsections No. 3 seed are 13-6 overall. They play No. 2-seed St. Cloud Cathedral (17-4) at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Dick Putz Field in St. Cloud. The Crusaders advanced with an 8-1 win over Holdingford on Friday.

In the other subsection semifinals game, No. 1 seed Little Falls plays No. 5 Albany at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Putz Field.

Little Falls advanced with a 7-0 win over Milaca, and Albany defeated Pierz 8-1.
