Amateur Baseball: Rails fall to Marshall

WILLMAR -- Marshall throttled Willmar for the second time in three days as the A's rolled to a 17-6 Cornbelt League win Thursday at Swansson Orange.

The A's erupted for nine runs in the second inning after batting around in the first to put three runs on the scoreboard. The top five batters in the Marshall lineup batted twice in the second with leadoff hitter Ben Korger and No. 3 Andrew Kinney singling twice.

Marshall collected 15 hits off starter Wade Adamson and Andrew Bangen. Kinney homered among his four hits to ignite the Marshall offense.

The Rails (0-11, 2-17) scored two runs in each of the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to avoid being shut out for the second time this week. Marshall beat the Rails 17-0 Tuesday in Marshall.

Travis Koenen singled twice in his two at-bats for the Rails with his sixth-inning hit driving in Jake Glidden and Whitey Ditterich, who both singled to reach base.

John Sawatzky also singled twice for Willmar, which hosts Sacred Heart on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. for another Cornbelt game.

The Rails won for just the second time this season after pounding out 17 hits and scoring 10 runs in the fifth inning, giving them a comfortable 14-6 lead.

Andrew Bangen, Josh Oestreich and Jake Glidden had three hits each for the Rails. Glidden knocked in three runs, including a two-run single in the fifth, as Dassel committed seven errors, leading to nine unearned runs for Willmar.

Whitey Ditterich worked all nine innings on the mound to earn the win. The lefty struck out seven.
