Amateur Baseball: Bird Island wins, Raymond eliminated

ST. CLOUD -- Bird Island was victorious in the first round of the Minnesota Class C State Amateur Baseball Tournament over the weekend but two other area teams saw their seasons end in the 48-team, single-elimination tournament at the Municipal Athletic Complex.

Bird Island, Region 11C's third-place finisher and final state qualifier, earned a convincing 6-1 win over Region 10C runner-up Ada on Saturday at Dick Putz Field. The Bullfrogs play next against Region 3C champion St. Patrick at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Putz Field.

Raymond, the Region 11C runner-up, fell in a tight game, 3-2, to Region 4C's Waterville on Sunday at Putz Field.

Region 9C runner-up Madison also lost in the first round, 4-2, to Region 8C's Nisswa in 15 innings on Sunday at Putz Field.

Region 15C champion New London-Spicer had a first-round bye and plays Leavenworth, a Region 2C team, at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Joe Faber Field. Leavenworth advanced with a 7-5 win over Belle Plaine on Sunday.

Region 11C champion Milroy, which also had a bye, plays Loretto, of Region 12C, at 2 p.m. Saturday at Faber. Loretto advanced with a 5-0 win over Wilmont on Friday

Region 9C champion Morris will come off its bye week to play Region 7C runner-up Waconia at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Faber. Waconia advanced with a 5-1 win over Stark on Friday.

Bird Island 6, Ada 1

Bird Island pitchers Jesse Bjur and Matt Geislinger shut down the Ada offense and the Bullfrogs advanced to the second round Saturday.

Bjur pitched scoreless ball the first seven innings when rain delayed the game. Geislinger relieved when the game resumed and pitched the final two innings, allowing Ada's lone run in the eighth.

The Bullfrogs scored twice in the third inning and tacked on another run in the fifth off Ada starter and loser Kyle Larson, more than enough support for Bjur and Geislinger. Bird Island put the game away with a three-run ninth.

The Bullfrogs had 11 hits, led by Tyler Hebrink, who was 3-for-4 with a double and a run batted in. Dylan Gass, Mark Neubauer and Shawn Dollerschell all had two hits, Ben Maiers had a hit and scored a run, Luke Kramer singled and drove in a run, and Dollerschell and Neubauer also contributed RBIs.

The Bullfrogs play next against Region 3C champion St. Patrick at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Dick Putz Field in St. Cloud.
