Amateur baseball: Frogs leap into 3rd round

Tribune photo by Rand Middleton Bird Island's Tyler Hebrink arrives at home plate after his home run to left-center at Putz Field scored Dylan Gass and Shawn Dollerschell in front for a 3-0 Bullfrogs' lead in the top of the first against St. Patrick on Sunday in St. Cloud. Hebrink also singled and doubled.

ST. CLOUD -- How 'bout those Frogs?

Bird Island, the No. 3 seed out of Region 11C, ousted St. Patrick, the champs of 3C, by a 6-4 score on Sunday afternoon in the second round of the Minnesota Amateur Baseball Tournament.

The Bullfrogs lashed 13 hits at Putz Field. The biggest blows were a three-run homer by Tyler Hebrink in the first inning and a two-run double by Elliot Serbus in the third.

The win went to draftee Adam Theis. The Kimball Express pitcher threw 4-2/3 spotless innings in relief of Jesse Bjur, who departed in the fifth with the Frogs up 5-4.

Next for the Islanders are the champs of 13C, the Fairmont Martins.

That game is at 11:30 a.m. Saturday on Putz. The winner would advance into Sunday's quarterfinal round of the single-elimination playoff which started with 48 teams on Aug. 18.

The Frogs got off to a hoppin'-good start when Dylan Gass and Shawn Dollerschell struck one-out singles back-to-back. Hebrink stepped up and powder a ball over the ivy just to the left of the 380-sign in dead center.

St. Patrick, a crossroads that draws its players from mainly New Prague, answered with 2 runs on two hits and a walk in the bottom of the first.

In the third with the bases loaded, Serbus struck a double to the left-field wall to score Gass and Dollerschell, though Mark Neubauer was out at the plate.

The Irish got an unearned run in the bottom of third to stay close, 5-3 and another in the fifth off Bjur, who allowed 6 hits in 4Zc innings.

But the Irish, who stole 6 bases, couldn't solve Theis. The righthanders stayed out of trouble until the ninth. With two outs, St. Pats had runners on second and third, but Theis got Josh Simon swinging for the third out.

Hebrink, the Frogs cleanup, double in an insurance run in the seventh while going 3-for-4. Gass also had three hits.

This is Bird Island's fifth state appearance but only the second since a run of three straight years (1951-1953) and first appearance since 1998.
