Boys soccer: Willmar spills Marshall 4-0

WILLMAR -- The Willmar Cardinals picked up a 4-0 shutout victory in their home debut on Tuesday evening.

Junior striker Mario Valero scored in the first minute, his first varsity goal.

Willmar deposited another early goal but Marshall didn't back down and held their own the last 20 minutes of the opening half.

The Tigers' co-ed line-up with a short three-player bench even seized the momentum and took some hard shots at Cardinals goalie Charlie Trochlil before the half ended with the home team up 2-0.

James Steer, a sophomore midfielder, notched his first varsity goal four minutes into the second half.

Jose Hernandez, a senior mid, assisted on three of the four goals. Junior Becerra and Christian Vallecillo also scored.

Willmar, which hosts Alexandria on Thursday (5 p.m.) to raise the lid on the Central Lakes schedule, outshot their Section 2A foed 19-9.

Willmar is 1-1 against section competition falling in the opener to Mankato West.
