Girls tennis: Cardinals blank Apollo

Tribune photo by Rand Middleton Willmar Cardinals 4-singles Hannah Hansen follows through after chasing down a ball deep to her forehand from Remi Deyak of St. Cloud Apollo/Sauk Rapids on Tuesday at the high school courts. Hansen beat her Central Lakes Conference opponent 6-1, 6-0.

WILLMAR -- Only one match went the distance as Willmar controlled the pace from the get-go Tuesday to collect a 7-0 sweep of St. Cloud Apollp/Sauk Rapids in a Central Lakes Conference dual.

Seniors Leah Ramon and Waverly Slette were in danger of falling in three sets at 2-doubles, but the Willmar duo won the last five games in the third set to rally for a 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 6-4 win.

The Cardinals never lost more than two games in the six other matches. Gabie Bierbaum at 1-singles, Hannah Hansen at 4-singles, Heather Horning/Kassy Linbo at 1-doubles and Tayva Vollan/Megan Anderson at 3-doubles all won a set 6-0 in their matches.

"Our goal was to come in and play strong and take care of business," said Willmar coach Jim Anderson. "Apollo graduated six seniors last year and their numbers are down a little bit. This is a nice win for the girls, to rebound from a couple of hard losses to a couple of tough CLC teams."

Willmar was upended by St. Cloud Tech and Brainerd last week to fall to .500 overall. The Cardinals -- at Fergus Falls on Thursday -- are now 2-2 in the CLC and 4-3 overall.

Also winning for Willmar Tuesday was Cayle Hovland at 2-singles and Bailey Hovland at 3-singles.
